The all-day Amka Africa Conference 2013 (Amka Africa=Awake Africa in Swahili) being held at Middlebury College on Saturday, April 13th will discuss the global consequences of the changes in Africa with an emphasis on how youth creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation are changing the face of the continent and its interaction with the rest of the world.

The event featuring keynote appearances from David Moinina Sengeh, a graduate student from Sierra Leone in MITs Media Lab and a successful social entrepreneur, and Fred Swaniker, the Ghanaian founder of the African Leadership Academy will be open to all students, faculty and staff on campus. The Conference aims to raise awareness and expose the Middlebury campus to the changes that are taking place on the African continent as well as culture and entertainment (food, fashion show, musical performances and many more surprises).

Teaching English in El Triunfo, Ecuador gives students an opportunity to help local students from ages 6-13 improve their English skills. Aside from the English teacher no one else in the town speaks English, so the ability to speak Spanish is necessary. The goal of this J-term program is to get the kids excited about English and help them improve their speaking abilities.

The World Camp Service Internship is a total immersion program that offers the opportunity to be challenged by work in rural Malawian communities. Our 4.5 week program provides on the ground training and guidance, a chance to work directly with students, teachers and community groups to address local challenges, and develop personal leadership skills and a deeper self-awareness. Interns work directly in schools teaching a HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness curriculum, and leading environmental awareness and gender empowerment workshops. While there is downtime and some free days, most of your time is spent teaching, or interacting with community members and students.

1. Assistant to the Program Director at Reclaim Childhood (RC) in Amman, Jordan

Interested in volunteering in Africa?  Want to learn more about the global water crisis?   Looking for experience working in the field?

The CWS Fellowship Program is a three-week water education and leadership training experience in Northern Region Ghana. The purpose of the program is to teach individuals about the global water crisis, and inspire them to become leaders in the field of international development.

Fellows are grouped in teams of four and paired with a rural community in Northern Region Ghana. On the ground, teams are first trained in water quality testing, and the CWS water treatment methods.  They then spend two and a half weeks in the field implementing and monitoring a CWS water business in their village. By the end of the 3 week program, each team will have provided a permanent source of safe drinking water for an entire community (approximately 500~1,000 people)!

Global Health Corps Fellowship

APPLICATION DEADLINE: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17

The Global Health Corps is working to build the movement for global health equity by supporting emerging leaders in year-long fellowships with global health organizations in Burundi, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, and the US. This year, they are hoping to place over 90 fellows in organizations like Partners In Health, the Millennium Villages Project, Clinton Health Access Initiative, and the State Department, working on everything from architecture to communications and fundraising, to training and direct service. GHC has a unique model for service learning, helping fellows to learn the leadership and technical skills they need in this field while pairing fellows with a local fellow to better understand culture and context, and emphasizing the importance of reflection and discernment while doing this work.
