Cross-Curricular Unit

This is a cross-curricular unit called Electricity through Chemistry and Mathematics. I was working on it together with my classmate Vijaya during EDST 320 class (Fall 2009).

We used the UbD (Understanding by Design) framework and our “Big Idea” for students were:

  • to understand what matter is composed of
  • to learn the periodic law and apply the characteristics of Mendeleev’s periodic table to understand the relationships that exist between the atoms, which are the basic building blocks of the universe
  • to understand  that energy can be transformed and used in other forms such as light, heat and motion
  • to see mathematical relations of fundamental electric units, i.e. electrical current, voltage, resistance and power
  • and to understand that the electricity use in a typical U.S. home can be decreased by a change in lifestyle.

At some point throughout the progress, we created a huge 41x80in poster that graphically illustrates the whole unit. You can open a web-optimized lower quality version by clicking on this pdf file.

It does not mirror our final version of this unit exactly though. Most of the information, however, is the same. The original poster file was too big to upload (17MB) and so if, by any chance, you want to print out your own copy using the proper file, contact me on erik.fendik@gmail.com and I could send it over.
