Assignments are a core expectation of university coursework – and, perhaps one of the most taken for granted aspects of our courses. Yet, there are many aspects of assignment design to consider as we think about how best to support student learning. Are we creating assignments that are transparent to students in terms of expectations? Does our syllabus reflect a range of assessments of learning, assessments for learning, and assessments as learning? How do we make sure that our assessments are designed to support learner variability?

In this session, we’ll begin with a panel discussion including instructional designers from the Office of Digital Learning and Inquiry, and Middlebury faculty, to surface a range of strategies and approaches for designing, executing, and responding to assignments. In the second half of the session, we invite you work with the facilitators to examine and redesign one of your own assignments.
