CRAMPUS POINT/COUNTERPOINT: Coverage Of the MiddKid Vid

Point:

The Campus’s coverage of the controversy over the Middkid video only made things worse. By bringing the issue up, the Campus only exacerbated the problem. I really think that if they had just let the issue lie things would have settled down on their own. There was no reason even to bring it up. Even if the video had some troubles with stereotyping; they would have blown over more quickly. Instead, because of this article, so much of the community’s attention is focused on the controversy over the video. Essentially they’re making a mountain out of a mole hill. By taking a magnifying glass to the problems that some students have with it, they make it seem like there is a greater amount of outrage than there really is. Well, I’m outraged at their audacity.

Counterpoint:

We really have nothing to write about. Have you not noticed that we go to school pretty much as far from anything exciting as is geographically possible in this day and age? I mean, what else can we really write articles on? Cows? People forget that Middlebury Vermont has: a) a strong local economy b) farmland c) nothing else that’s even remotely interesting. Even the college is too well behaved to write a newspaper about. Laptop theft was pretty much the most noteworthy thing to happen here in like 20 years. Why our small army of journalists continues to grow every year is beyond me. Seriously, have you seen the fucking articles we put out? “Public safety buys new SUV?” Glad we didn’t let that gem slip by unnoticed. So when something came along that people actually care about, we jumped on it.
