About the retreat

Wednesday May 31st – Thursday June 1st – Sleepy Hollow Inn – Huntington, VT

What does it mean to bring pauses, silence and/or various forms of contemplative practice into our lives, our teaching and our classrooms?  How do contemplative moments serve us as scholars, colleagues and teachers (not to mention as busy people who could benefit from a pause or two!).  What particular tricks of the “contemplative pedagogy” trade might be helpful to use in your particular classes.  How does contemplative pedagogy “translate” into various fields within natural sciences, social sciences, the arts and the humanities?

We invite all interested faculty members to join Prof. Marc Lapin and Prof. Rebecca Kneale Gould for a one and a half day retreat in contemplative pedagogy at the lovely Sleepy Hollow Inn in Huntington.  Our workshop will consist of an afternoon, an overnight and second day (ending mid-afternoon) with sessions facilitated by college faculty with experience in contemplative pedagogy, as well as a few guests.

While this retreat will provide opportunities for faculty with experience in contemplative pedagogy to continue to learn from one another, our primary goal is to welcome faculty who are curious about contemplative pedagogy, have little or no experience with it and want to learn a little more about it.  There is no requirement or expectation that anyone who attends will go on to “do” contemplative pedagogy in the future.  This is simply an opportunity for learning and exploration in a relaxed environment.

Our retreat is intended to be truly retreat-like, hence the beautiful setting).  While staying overnight is not required for everyone who attends the workshop, we highly encourage you to take this opportunity to pause and unplug after Commencement (you will also be rewarded with a scrumptious breakfast).  In addition to a series of lively workshop sessions, there will be ample opportunity for down time (rest, hikes etc.) as well as informal visiting over meals.
