Periodicals are Library Use Only

Arabella in the Serials Department recently alerted me to an incident of periodicals that were allowed to leave the Main Library, so here is a reminder about policy.

To ensure the availability of college and LIS resources, periodicals should not leave the Libraries.
They are library-use-only and may not be used outside the Library security gates.
This means that they cannot be used in the Great Hall at MBH, in the Rehearsal’s Cafe at the CFA or in the Cafe at the Main Library.

Please pay attention to all gate alarms. Periodicals should not be allowed outside the security gates.

The libraries have really nice places to sit and browse through journals and magazines, and users are more than welcome to bring in refreshments from the café (or elsewhere) to add to their enjoyment. Please explain to patrons that periodicals STAY IN THE LIBRARY so that everyone can have access to a valuable resource.

Many thanks for your attention to this policy.
Best,
Elin

Periodicals Counting Project

The periodicals counting project may mean that periodical resources are not returned to their place on the shelf as quickly as usual.
Please assist our users as needed in locating periodicals or microfilm/fiche materials.
If you are unable to find periodicals and microfilm/fiche in place on the shelf, remember to check periodicals holding/counting areas at each library.
At the Main Library, please also check the Main Periodicals re-shelving area on the lower level (the last set of shelves before you get to the shipping/receiving garage.
Thanks!
Elin

Armstrong periodicals surveys

Much like Main Library Armstrong has started a periodicals survey this term. You’ll notice in the current periodicals section and the reshelving area downstairs next to the bullentin board, signs asking patrons to leave used current and bound periodicals on carts in those areas. Before these can be reshelved please take them into room 208 for tallying. There are two sheets in 208, one is for Ill’s and the other for patron use. Please tally all periodicals you find that have been used on the sheets. If a journal is not listed then it’s not part of the survey and doesn’t need to be counted. Microfilm is also part of this survey. Night workers if you are not certain about how to proceed leave all the periodicals on carts and Nancy and I will take care of them. I will be going over this with everyone next week.

Periodicals Project – counting in-library use

Starting January 5th and continuing for the foreseeable future.
Periodicals loaned out through ILL and those used within the Main Library will be counted separately
ILL will place all of its print (bound and current) and microform periodicals on a purple cart located in the Reserve Area.
Circulation staff will continue to place periodicals – either returned to Circ desk or found in their “sweeps” through the building – on the Circ returns area shelves.
Periodicals found during building “sweeps” can also be left on the wooden cart near the start of the Current Periodicals section.
Serials Dept staff will collect and count these stashes as well as stashes of microforms from atop the microform cabinets.
Once counted, the volumes will be placed on the marked shelves at the rear of the Lower Level stacks (in the PQ-PR domain) – this will include Bound Periodicals and microforms. Serials staff will shelve the counted Current Periodicals. Stacks staff will shelve the counted Bound Periodicals and microforms.
Users will be asked to help by placing issues and volumes on the marked shelves and carts in the periodicals area after using.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask Arabella.
