Weekly Circ Report 3 Dec 2008

US Leader Weekly Report –
Date: 3 Dec 2008
Name: Elin Waagen – Workgroups: Circulation, Stacks, Reserves

Stats: Monthly Nov stats to follow next week
Progress on Goals: to follow next week
Highlights:
• Great Thanksgiving break! Lots of great support covering for each other to accommodate travel and vacation plans. Go team!
• Heavy library activity at Armstrong and Main libraries prior to Thanksgiving break – resuming again on Sunday night; busy last week of classes in full swing! Quiet at Music during break
• Great to have HD open at noon on Sunday after break – really needed the support
• Browsing DVD activity
• Compiled Oberlin stats
• Processing refunds for returned library materials that were transferred to college bill
• Student scheduling activity across all areas for exams, winter term, spring term
• Armstrong: very busy with ILL, Rapid, NExpress, Web requests; all equipment working; lcd projectors in high demand
• Main – 24/7 in full swing
• Music – Quiet day before Thanksgiving. Maybe 10 patrons all day
• Monthly circ lists and stats etc.
• NExpress and paging piled up from break – busy weekend activity catching up on processing requests; 21 NExpress requests at Music from the same patron…
• Circ mailbox – backlog from break processed on weekend
• Web requests for all branches for November were at the highest levels since July. Total in July 08:1231. Total in Nov 08: 1080. Music was higher than it has ever been at 209 (and the overall was only 150 lower)
• Updated web pages for reporting materials not on shelf/missing
• Planning student worker holiday buffet
• Student schedule work at all branches
• Reserves: following up on many overdue lib-use only media items – taken out of the library; WT ERes submitted; working on Circ blog and getting documentation on Circ Wiki
• Reserves: met with Jeff and Mike L. to review Docutek’s capabilities and possibility of using Segue in place of Docutek. It was a general consensus that Docutek is a very efficient, reliable and capable system; we questioned if we really want to change it. Another meeting scheduled this week with Alex and Adam to be sure we haven’t missed anything and to continue the discussion. Since Docufax is not used widely, and most of the copy machines on campus have capability of creating PDFs, we could cancel that contract
• Equipment: continued high demand of Ethernet cables, hard drives; following up on lots of overdue equipment; exploring the idea of circulating laptop locks to our borrowers; use of the new Flash HD camcorders is taking off!
• Stacks: returns are starting to peak; preparing for overflow shelving for returns

Challenges
• Staff injury; staff and student illness; our student workers are under heavy stress!
• Reserves: fewer staff available to process reserve requests and resolve reserve issues prior to break
• Overnight problems with printers, particularly 242K
• Schedules/staffing: gaps in student staff schedule during the busy “pre-break, post-break, last week of classes, 24/7” period; evening, weekend and reserve staff on vacation
• Academic calendar – last week of classes immediately following holiday
• Main Media Lab – busy activity on Sunday after break – not sure of staffing?
