This week I want to focus on the specific writing mistakes I made, but first I will lightly touch on everything else. I need to be a more dynamic speaker! I could tell everyone’s interest was waning fast when I was giving my presentation. I’m not trying to get down on myself, but in the future I would like to think of better ways to convey this information for people who might not have a lot of background on the subject. As usual, fluency is something I need to work on as I needed to pause while speaking quite frequently. I could memorize my talk, but I think it would be more to my advantage if I could just communicate to people by listing a few key items.
Now for writing. I have trouble distinguishing between formal Chinese and colloquial. A few of the corrections made to my blog post last week were of this nature. Also, I’m still having trouble with the word “的”. When meeting with my language partner I couldn’t tell when I should use it and when I shouldn’t. She said it was similar to me correcting her “the” usage. I hope this is something that’s easier to correct than that. Another problem seems to be recognizing when I’m saying to much and when I’m saying too little. It seems like I over-complicate certain sentences by trying to combine everything into one phrase. My language partner suggested using a more balanced strategy in which my sentences are relatively the same length.
I wouldn’t feel right without leaving some positives, so I’d like to say that I feel like I’m becoming more versatile in my speech. While the overall speed remains fairly slow, I think I’m becoming better at explaining myself without resorting to English if someone doesn’t understand me.
