11/1, UVM: The Translating Identity Conference

The Translating Identity Conference (TIC) explores a wide array of topics in discourses regarding gender and transgender identities, expressions, communities, and intersections. TIC is a free, student organized, non-profit conference that seeks to reach not only the University of Vermont & the Burlington community, but the nation as a whole. A one-day event, TIC has numerous sessions to choose from at any time that are directed towards people at all levels of inclusion in the trans and allied communities. This conference is a safe space for everyone to come, learn, and enjoy themselves!

It Happens Here: Share You Story, Stories due by 11/5 @ go/IHH,

It Happens Here is opening for submissions of students’ experiences with sexual violence. These stories will be shared with the Middlebury community at an anonymous reading on November 10.

10/21: 4:30-6:00 PM, Nancy McHugh Presents “Grounding Knowledge through the Mothers Committee of Bayview Hunters Point”
By combining the insights of Chela Sandoval, Sandra Harding, Patricia Hill Collins, Lorraine Code, and current work on situated knowledges, McHugh analyzes the experiences and activism of the women of Bayview Hunters Point, San Francisco, focusing specifically on a community action group called the Mothers Committee. The women of the Mothers Committee of Bayview Hunters Point are certainly valuable strangers to the social order. It is hard to a imagine a group whose members are more outside of science—they are female, African American and living in one of the poorest, most toxic, and most violent communities in the U.S. They self-consciously utilize this positioning to their advantage as part of their methodology as an oppressed group.

Speaker Kevin Moss will give a talk on, “Russia’s Queer Science: The Theoretical Underpinnings of Russia’s Law Against Gay Propaganda.”

10/22: 7:30-9:00 PM, Breeze Harper: Food (in) Justice in the 21st Century Fall Symposium Speaker
On Ferguson, Thug Kitchen, and Trayvon Martin: Intersections of [Post] Race-Consciousness, Food Justice, and Hip Hop Vegan Ethics. Sistah Vegan aka Breeze Harper discusses her new book project that focuses on critical race and black feminist perspective on black male vegan activist using hip hop methodologies to teach about veganism and other intersectional issues such as decolonizing the diet, being ‘race-conscious’, and using gardening to combat the prison to pipeline phenomenon.

10/23: 8:30 PM, “Raise Hope. Demand and End”
Join students, faculty and staff in raising awareness to the presence of intimate partner violence on college campuses and in taking a stand against this violence. Students will perform music, poetry, and readings. Snacks will be provided.

October 2012 marked the 75th anniversary of the 1937 Haitian Massacre where thousands of Haitians and their Dominican-born descendants were murdered in what the US Ambassador in Santo Domingo, R. Henry Norweb, described as “a systematic campaign of extermination.” Join a group of Middlebury artists, activists, students, faculty and staff as they come together to breathe life to a tragedy long forgotten, or for some, a tragedy they never knew took place. Border of Lights is a collective coming together to commemorate, collaborate and continue​ the legacy of hope and justice.

Join Naila Baloch, Chaplaincy Fellow and Muslim Advisor, for a night of Henna this Friday as part of the celebration of Eid this upcoming Saturday.

October 4, 2:00 pm, Axinn 232: “Queer Comrades: Films about China”
Join Chinese film-maker, activist and founder of Queer Comrades, XiaoGang Wei for a screening and discussion of two of his short films. “Brothers” is a documentary about a transgender individual in a small city in China, and “Surfing for Love” is a talk show discussing “the rules” of the LGBT online dating scene. Queer Comrades is China’s only non-profit LGBT webcast, dedicated to documenting queer culture in all its aspects in order to raise public awareness of LGBT matters.

October 4, 2:00-4:00 pm, Drop off at Chellis: “Sister to Sister Scavenger Hunt”
Middlebury College Students and Middle School Girls from Addison County will participate in a Fall Scavenger hunt to kick off the new school year. The STS members will search for clues around the Middlebury College campus to bond, enjoy the foliage, and complete a fun picture scavenger hunt!
