Attention aspiring Podcasters and Journalists: The Middlebury Fellowship in Narrative Journalism is now accepting applications for the “How Did You Get Here Project.”
NJF is a full-year, extracurricular program run by ENAM Scholar-in-Residence Sue Halpern in conjunction with Middlebury Magazine that is open to 2nd-, 3rd-, and 4th-year students. Participants produce audio portraits of individual members of the Middlebury College student body that answer the question, “How did you get here?”
NJF functions, essentially, as a fifth course. It requires significant time-commitment. No grade is given, but students who successfully complete the program are paid an honorarium.
In this way, it also functions as a job. Students need not have previous journalism experience.
Basic Requirements:
You must be in at least your 2nd year of Middlebury College.
You must be able to commit at least 10 hour a week to the project, and much more than that when you are on deadline.
You must be able to meet deadlines and be a team player.
The application is attached. It is due no later than midnight on Tuesday, September 21st and should be emailed to both Sue Halpern and Matt Jennings: shalpern@middlebury.edu and mjenning@middlebury.edu
Poynter’s journalism internship database
Students can look for summer, fall and spring internships while news organizations can submit their openings.
Internships serve as a stepping stone for young journalists to improve their portfolio, add work experience and break into the journalism industry. That’s why Poynter maintains this list of news media internships.
News organizations can submit their information and students can look through the listings below. Please note: Poynter does not accept or list unpaid internships.

Students! ProPublica and The Pudding Want to Help Pay For Your Journalism Expenses in 2021.
They are giving 25 scholarships to help you attend a journalism conference and/or to support your work.
ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as they’re published.
We are proud to announce our sixth annual scholarship program. This year we are teaming up with The Pudding, a visual essays online publication.
ProPublica, with additional support from The Pudding, will be sponsoring need-based scholarships for 25 students to attend an eligible journalism conference in 2021 and/or to contribute toward journalism related expenses such as subscriptions to news publications, software, FOIA fees, or equipment (think cameras, recorders, etc.).
Residents eligible to file a W-9 can apply. We especially encourage students from an underrepresented group in journalism — including people of color, women, LGBTQ+ people and people with disabilities — to apply.
The $750 scholarships will go to students who would otherwise be unable to attend conferences or purchase supplies to support their education and ongoing reporting.
The following conferences offer great opportunities for networking and professional development, especially for those just starting out in journalism. Scholarship recipients will also have the opportunity to meet ProPublica and The Pudding staff throughout the year at conferences (virtual or in person). Check out last year’s scholarship recipients.
You can apply for the scholarship here. The deadline is Feb. 22. Students have the option to select a conference as part of their application. We understand many have yet to announce dates and that formats may change, but we would still like to know which you are interested in attending.
