The Thomas Cole National Historic Site (TCNHS) is now reviewing applications for the Cole fellowship, a one-year, residential fellowship at the Thomas Cole National Historic site. Fellows participate in the research and interpretation of the work, home, and studios of the artist, Thomas Cole (1801 – 1848). Four candidates are invited to join the site June 3, 2020 – May 23, 2021. Applications will be accepted through February 10, 2020, with priority given to those received before or on JANUARY 24, 2020.
The Thomas Cole National Historic Site (TCNHS) preserves and interprets the home and studios of Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School of painting, the nation’s first art movement. Cole’s profound influence on America’s cultural landscape inspires us to engage broad audiences through programs and exhibitions that are relevant today.
Through a combination of research, interpretation, and hands-on projects, Cole Fellows conduct significant research and gain professional museum experience. Selected candidates are provided the opportunity to:
Additional Compensation: Free shared housing on-site in a fully furnished house with private bedrooms. Electric, water, heat, internet, and garbage removal is provided, along with a monthly stipend of $500.
Qualifications: TCNHS seeks self-motivated recent graduates, graduating college seniors, and graduate students who have expressed a commitment to pursue careers in history, art, museums, material culture, decorative arts, collection and exhibition management, and/or education. Applicants should be flexible, organized, energetic, have a passion for art and ideas, and an affinity for working with the public. A car is helpful, but not required. Participation for the entire program is required. The work-week in season is Wednesday-Sunday.

The Center for Emergent Materials (CEM) engages researchers from multiple disciplines to work in teams on scientific problems too complex for a single researcher to solve.
CEM has three Interdisciplinary Research Groups:
IRG-1: Spin-Orbit Coupling in Correlated Materials: Novel Phases and PhenomenaIRG-1 is creating novel materials designed to tune the delicate interplay between electron correlations arising from Coulomb interactions and spin-orbit interactions that are enhanced in heavier elements. Their focus is on 5d materials where tuning by chemistry, structure and epitaxial strain enables topological phases, quantum phase transitions and novel magnetism.
IRG-2: Control of 2D Electronic Structure and 1D Interfaces by Surface Functionalization of Group IV Graphane AnaloguesIRG-2 is creating new materials: single atom thick 2D materials reminiscent of graphene but composed of heavier group IV atoms. These allow tuning of electronic properties by covalently attaching surface species to enable novel electronic phases and spin physics. Spatially-patterning in 2D creates the exciting possibility of novel 1D interfaces.
IRG-3: Nonlinear Interactions Between Spin Flux and Engineered Magnetic TexturesIRG-3 is pushing spin transport studies into the nonlinear regime with a program that aims to understand spin fluxes interacting with magnetic textures. Nonlinear response could move beyond diffusive spin currents to enable novel approaches to spin manipulation and control for next generation spintronics.
Students will participate in professional development activities focusing on preparing for graduate school and research related careers. They will also participate in peer networking and social activities. Successful REU applicants will be paired with a faculty mentor from a core CEM department (Physics, Materials Science & Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Chemistry) and will perform experimental or computational research projects aligned with CEM focal areas.
This 10-WEEK UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM includes a stipend of $5000, reasonable travel costs, and housing (dorm room – two people per room). Participants have access to OSU library and COTA bus transportation.

Three full-time interns to assist with biological field work from early-May to early September 2020 on the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Oceanville, New Jersey. This is a non-paying internship position. Housing is provided.
Opportunity Description: Duties: Data collection will follow standardized biological inventory / monitoring procedures and may include: vegetation surveys, salt marsh elevation surveys, waterbird surveys, invertebrate sampling, and threatened/endangered species monitoring. Other tasks include bird banding, invasive plant species inventory, mapping and eradication. Interns may mechanically and chemically control invasive plant species within the refuge boundary and monitor areas that were treated. In addition, assist with water level management actions within refuge impoundments. Other duties as assigned include, but not limited to data entry and editing, environmental education, public outreach and interpretation, maintenance, construction, and office assistance.
Qualifications: Interns may be working long and variable hours in adverse conditions. Adverse conditions include, but are not limited to: working in hot and humid weather conditions, biting insects, walking on uneven/muddy/wet terrain, carrying heavy field equipment, and walking long distances. Applicants must be in good physical condition, possess valid driver’s license, have good communication and organizational skills, ability to work well with others, live in close quarters, and be an enthusiastic field worker. Work vehicle, field gear and equipment provided. Familiarity with field research techniques, data collection procedures, and computer skills is helpful. Independent projects may be possible as time allows, and college internship credit may also be possible according to individual institutional guidelines. Position will be approximately 40 hours per week and includes weekend work.
