The Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS), a graduate school of Middlebury College, offers hands-on, immersive, and flexible graduate degrees in international policy, international education, and linguistics, that aim to educate students to advance understanding, promote peace, and drive change in pursuit of a more just world.
Come learn about the special scholarships, study away programs, and accelerated masters programs available only to Middlebury undergraduate students.

Historical Collections Summer Internship
Role Description
OVERVIEW
30 hours per week, including some evenings and Saturdays
The Bixby Library is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented intern to gain hands-on experience working with historic objects, archives and research resources while assisting the Bixby Library in achieving its goal of expanding access, awareness, and appreciation of the region’s cultural heritage.
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT SCOPE
The 2023 Bixby Library Historical Collections Intern will practice and improve skills in historical objects and archives.
The intern will be guided by the Director and our historic collections working group with decades of professional experience in archives, museums, and library science.
The Historical Collections Intern will work on the care, cataloging, and accessibility of Bixby Library’s collection of artifacts, artwork, and archives. Internship projects will include research into the specific history and historical context of 15 to 20 high-priority objects and artifacts, writing descriptions for each. Additionally, they will draft at least five newsletter briefs and social media posts about select artifacts.
The Bixby Library is home to hundreds of historic objects and artifacts, as well as historic documents, books, newspapers, photographs, artwork, and furniture – all of which provide windows into the history and heritage of the region and connections beyond to regional and national experience.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate degree in a related field or equivalent experience
- Advanced degree in museum studies, museum education, history, archaeology, science/ecology, or related field preferred
- Experience working with collection management software
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks, including a strong ability to work under the pressure of multiple deadlines
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work well with colleagues, other staff, and volunteers
- Research and writing skills
- Exhibit design and promotion
- A commitment to collaboration and an enthusiasm for the area’s local history, and its future

Do you love art and community building? We are seeking an artist to transform the Middlebury College Recycling Center silo while living and working in Middlebury this summer. This project is intended for a student artist interested in revitalization, creativity, and contribution to the college community.
We are looking for a creative student passionate about community and the arts to turn the Middlebury College Recycling Center Silo into a piece of public art this upcoming summer. While the project guidelines are loose to allow ample room for your creativity, we are looking for a semi-permanent project that will be completed by August 2023 and can stay vibrant for 3 to 5 years. The selected student artist will receive a $4,000 grant to live and work on campus, $2,000 in funding for materials, and studio space in the Old Stone Mill.

Role Description
This undergraduate Internship opportunity has been referred to us by Middlebury trustee Helen Riess P’13, ’15. Dr. Riess is founder, CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of Empathetics Inc., a company that provides web-based and blended empathy-training and related relational-skills solutions for health care. In addition, Dr. Riess is an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
Empathetics, Inc., was founded in 2012 to provide innovative empathy and interpersonal skills training through an advanced e-learning platform, live training workshops and consulting services for medical professionals, and non-clinical staff. Empathetics leverages new, scientifically proven methods that enhance human relationships, increase patient and customer satisfaction, and make professional practices more effective, efficient, and enjoyable.
This internship is ideally suited to Middlebury students interested in the e-learning industry, marketing, technology, businesses providing social impact, communications, and business applications of advancing social skills in the health professions. The Empathetics Internship is a truly interdisciplinary opportunity for someone interested in the e-learning platforms, marketing, and technology within a social enterprise startup.
The Opportunity: The intern will have an opportunity to take Empathetics courses and learn to speak knowledgeably about the science of empathy. The intern will develop essential skills in helping Empathetics leverage its social impact by learning to work with popular Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms and learning management systems (LMS) that deliver the Empathetics programs. The intern will learn essential skills for client engagement, business development, data migration, and healthcare communications. Reporting directly to Dr. Helen Riess and our leadership team, the intern will have an opportunity to work with staff to contribute to marketing and business development, learn to navigate CRM platforms (Salesforce; Hubspot) and assist with technical aspects of the e-learning company.
The Commitment:
This is a three-month remote work opportunity that offers 20 hours per week, a flexible schedule,
and requires daily engagement with the team.

Requirements: The intern must demonstrate an interest in the mission of Empathetics, timeliness and professionalism.
This internship is funded with a CCI award of $4,000.00. If you are offered and accept this internship, please be aware that your funding for this position is provided by CCI, and therefore you will be required to complete funded internship paperwork. Typically, seniors graduating in May and those who have not been enrolled for Spring ’23 are not eligible for CCI sponsored internships, but occasional exceptions are made. Students planning to transfer in the Fall are also not eligible.
