Paper #1

Paper #1 (6 pages): The Emergence of the Modern Arabic Novel

In your first paper, please bring together any of the issues raised in the written homework assignments to provide a coherent picture of the emergence of the Arabic novel from its pre-modern predecessors to Mahfouz’ Midaq Alley. Or feel free to argue otherwise: that the development of the Arabic novel is entirely incoherent. In doing so, you may respond to one or more of the questions from the written homework assignments; do not feel limited by the scope of any one question. However, the paper itself should constitute a cohesive whole and not simply read as 2-3 responses to individual questions. You are strongly encouraged to refer back to the reading “What Is A Novel” by Eagleton in order to provide a theoretical backbone to your thinking, as well as to use the resources on reserve for your use in the David Family Library.

Draft due Monday, 10/12

For Monday’s class, please print out and bring to class the following:

  1. An introductory paragraph, ready to go;
  2. An outline of your argument: the point-by-point intellectual narrative that you’ll walk your reader through;
  3. 7-8 citations minimum that you will use in your paper to demonstrate the validity of your reasoning.

Paper due, 10/12 – please send to me as a pdf file!

Note: I will return your paper to you with corrections in the week following Monday 10/12. You will have the option of submitting a re-write of your paper (taking my corrections into account) for additional credit to your grade.
