Paper #5 (due May 1)

Read John Updike’s review of Abd al-Rahman Munif’s Cities of Salt (The New Yorker, Oct. 17, 1988), linked below.  In your opinion, what does Updike get right and what does he get wrong in his review of Cities of Salt?  Do you agree or disagree with Updike’s overall assessment of the novel?  In part or in whole?  In short, please write a review of the review.

The paper is due on Thursday, May 1st by 5:00pm.  Please send your paper to me via email (slieb@middlebury.edu) as a pdf file.
