As of today, any authorized Middlebury College user who has, or creates, a free account with the Chronicle of Higher Education using your @middlebury.edu e-mail address, has three new ways to access The Chronicle:

1) From your iPad. Download The Chronicle’s iPad editions at no cost to the individual. You can download either or both sections of The Chronicle. The Chronicle’s free iPad app can be found here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id414901678.

2) From your smart phone or tablet using the device’s Web browser. The new mobile interface makes The Chronicle easy to read when one is on the go.

3) From any computer, from any location in the world. You can get direct access to Chronicle.com from any remote location without having to go through a proxy server. This should be very appealing to those who read Academe Today or any of other Chronicle e-newsletters from locations off campus.

To take advantage of this mobile access, all that is required is for authorized users to have a free Chronicle account using their @middlebury.edu email address. A Chronicle account can be created by going to Chronicle.com and clicking on the “create” link at top, right hand side of the Web page. If you are one of the 200 Middlebury users who already have a Chronicle.com account, you don’t need to do anything. If you have forgotten your password, you can go here for online help: http://chronicle.com/myaccount/login/forgotpassword/.

If you have problems or comments, please e-mail us at eaccess-admin@middlebury.edu.

December: Staff Council reps summarized the district meetings conducted jointly by SC reps and vice presidents; these issues arose in multiple district meetings:

Increased workload due to reduced staffing has made it necessary to rely on student workers and the challenges for those supervising

Expectations of exempt high-level managers of non-exempt staff to respond during off-duty hours

Campus-wide communication

Tim Spears gave a progress report addressing working conditions in high-temperature work areas (dining hall kitchens, for example) on hot days.

Joe Antonioli from LIS demonstrated online classifieds.

January: Reports from committees unveiled issues relating to dorm damage (Community Council), benefits, and the possibility of staff to direct their retirement accounts (HR-6)

A recent furnace failure led to a discussion about adding a statement to the thermal comfort policy that would apply to employees working in offices when the heat is not sufficient on winter days.

We discussed the upcoming launch of online classifieds: go.middlebury.edu/classifieds

We discussed last year’s communications regarding the merit bonuses, and how it can be communicated and implemented more clearly this year.

— Interested staff members are always welcome to join Staff Council during our meetings – the second Wednesday of every month from 9-10:30 a.m., almost always in the Crest Room in McCullough. The next one will be February 8th.

Over the months that MiddPoints changed from its printed version to its current online version, Staff Council and members of the administration heard repeatedly from staff members that the classified advertising was one of the most missed parts of the printed MiddPoints. In collaboration with Human Resources and Communications, Staff Council is pleased to announce that online classified advertising is now available to the Middlebury College community – staff, faculty, and students – at http://sites.middlebury.edu/classifieds

The Web Services group of LIS has designed an online classifieds function using the WordPress platform. You will need to log in with the username and password you use for e-mail to view the classifieds or to post an ad – just go to http://sites.middlebury.edu/classifieds or find it easily at http://portal.middlebury.edu

These are the categories in which ads can be posted:

Books

Borrow

Computers & Electronics

Courses and Training

Event Tickets

Everything Else

Furniture

Lost & Found

New

Care Provider

Real Estate & Housing

Sporting Goods

Transportation

Wanted

A posted ad will be automatically removed after 30 days. We ask that if your ad is successful before 30 days, you remove the ad yourself. As with all online services provided by Middlebury College, the classified advertising site is governed by the policies stated in the employee and student handbooks.

We thought we would ring-in the new year with a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the work required to bring over 76,000 full-text journals and hundreds of online databases to the Middlebury community. Both the end, and the beginning, of each year are the busiest for those of us maintaining library collections online and off, in print.

Most of our efforts from September into early November go toward making sure our subscriptions, for both print and online journals, continue uninterrupted from one year to the next. Of the nearly 2,000 subscriptions we have, there are always a few that somehow fail to get renewed despite our best efforts. For example, we might discover in March that we have not received any recent issues of Veja, a weekly magazine published in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Occasionally, we can fill the gaps of a lapsed subscription, but not always.

There is usually a mountain of mail awaiting us in the new year: books, newspapers, magazines, and journals from all over the world and bills for these books, newspapers, and magazines from around the world. If we spend the last few days of the previous year ensuring access to our library collections after December 31st, we spend the first few days of the new year digging ourselves out of the mail room, looking for those lost issues from the previous year and for bills to pay.

Especially in the new year, but any other time too, please let us know if you cannot find something online or in print that you know was there before. Our email: eaccess-admin@middlebury.edu. Happy new year!
