Aline Germain-Rutherford Named Associate VP for Language Schools & Graduate Programs

Dear Colleagues:

Middlebury is very pleased to announce that, starting on June 1, 2011, Aline Germain-Rutherford will join the College year-round, as Associate Vice President for Language Schools and Graduate Programs and Professor of Linguistics. Before joining Middlebury, Aline was associate professor at the University of Ottawa, as well as director of the Canadian Centre for Studies and Research on Bilingualism and Language Planning (CCERBAL) at Ottawa and, since 2005, director of the Middlebury French School. She has also acted as director of content development for Middlebury Interactive Languages’ new French online program, MiddWorld Online. Aline’s primary areas of responsibility will include the Doctor of Modern Languages program, development of faculty recruitment and training protocols for the Language Schools, and oversight of the selection process for major scholarship recipients. As a member of the Middlebury faculty Aline will also take a leadership role in further developing the College’s newly launched linguistics program. She will continue as director of the French School for another three years and will remain in her current development role at MiddWorld Online.

The author and co-author of several major textbook series and scholarly articles, Professor Germain-Rutherford is much sought after internationally as a speaker on topics relating to applied linguistics and foreign language pedagogy. She holds a Doctorat, Didactologie/Didactique des langues et des cultures secondes from the Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris III, a Diplômes d’études approfondies (D.E.A.), Phonétique expérimentale from the Université de Provence, Aix-en-Provence, and is also the recipient of the 3M National Teaching Fellow Award, Canada’s most distinguished national award for excellence in teaching and leadership in higher education.
